Loading Google Fonts locally in Breakdance, without a migration

Install the font in the WordPress Font Library and Breakdance Extended switches every page, preset and global setting to the local files. No re-saving, no search and replace.

Loading fonts from Google is convenient, and since the Munich court ruling in 2022 it is also a well-known way to collect a warning letter in Germany. The fix is simple in theory: host the files yourself. In practice it means touching every page that uses the font.

Use the Font Library WordPress already has

Since WordPress 7.0 the Font Library works with classic themes too. Install a font under Appearance > Fonts and WordPress downloads the files and prints the font faces itself.

What the extension does

  • Fonts from the library appear in the Breakdance font list with the suffix (local)
  • A Google font that is installed in the library keeps its Breakdance entry, but loads from your site
  • Existing pages, presets and global settings switch over without changes
  • Optionally, all other Google fonts disappear from Breakdance, so nobody can add one by accident

This very website uses Bricolage Grotesque, Inter and JetBrains Mono, all served from the Font Library. Open your browser’s network tab and look for a request to Google Fonts. You will not find one.
